St. Clair County Transit District to Expand On-Demand Service to Fairmont City on May 1
On the heels of completing its six-month pilot program, St. Clair County Transit District (SCCTD) today announced it will continue offering the on-demand, shared-ride SCCTD Flyer service in East St. Louis, while expanding the service area to include Fairmont City beginning May 1st. The expanded service will replace the fixed-route #7 MetroBus, which is being discontinued on June 15 as part of the planned route changes detailed in SCCTD’s Transit Vision 2020 Network Plan. The SCCTD Flyer is a door-to-transit and transit-to-door service that helps close the sometimes-lengthy gap that can exist between transit stops and homes, workplaces, schools, healthcare facilities, shopping establishments, and entertainment venues.
The SCCTD Flyer costs $3 per one-way trip to or from one of the four local MetroLink Stations (5th & Missouri, Emerson Park, Washington Park, and JJK Center) and connecting MetroBus routes within the boundaries of East St. Louis and Fairmont City. Service is available weekdays between 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and can be scheduled by calling (618) 800-6884 or downloading the TransLoc app, which is available through the Apple Store or Google Play. Passes can be paid for through the app, at one of the MetroLink stations or at the East St. Louis Township Building, Gateway Market, Neighbors Marketplace and Quick Bite at the Belleville MetroLink Station. No cash fares will be accepted.
“We are streamlining our services to meet the changing needs of our customer base,” said Herb Simmons, Chair of the St. Clair County Transit District Board of Trustees. “The fixed-route MetroBus line in Fairmont City has historically experienced low ridership numbers, and we feel the SCCTD Flyer will be a better fit for this area. We timed the rollout of the SCCTD Flyer for May 1st so current #7 MetroBus riders have plenty of time to familiarize themselves with the new service. We are confident these changes will prove advantageous.”
Other cities, including Kansas City, Mo., Sacramento, Calif., and Arlington, Texas, have implemented programs similar to the SCCTD Flyer, which meet community demand by offering more flexible service in areas where larger bus vehicles are not needed.
