Bus Bench Installation Spurs Additional Transit Improvements

The impact of “The Story of a Bench” program continues to grow. Citizens for Modern Transit (CMT) and AARP in St. Louis, in partnership with the SCCTD and Metro Transit, recently unveiled the latest bench installation at MetroBus Stop #15907 on Commerce Lane in Fairview Heights. The project features a bright red, all-weather bus bench with the slogan “Enjoy the Ride,” a sponsor plaque and a QR code that allows riders to share feedback about how the bench has improved their transit experience.

The installation sparked nearly $17,000 in additional transit stop enhancements funded by SCCTD, including a new bus shelter with solar-powered lighting, improved ADA accessibility and upgraded concrete flatwork to create a safer, more comfortable waiting environment.

The Fairview Heights project marks the seventh bench installed in St. Clair County and the 13th completed across the bi-state region. To date, the first 13 installations have helped generate more than $50,000 in additional transit stop improvements, demonstrating how small investments can lead to meaningful upgrades for riders.

Rider feedback continues to underscore the value of these enhancements. Transit users have shared stories about how the benches provide relief after long days at work or school, while carrying groceries or while managing mobility challenges and health conditions.

Building on this momentum, SCCTD and Metro Transit are collaborating to install 16 bus shelters throughout St. Clair County. Eleven have been completed, with five more scheduled for installation later this year.
